The Foot with Osteoarthritis

There are many possible causes of foot pain, one of which is osteoarthritis. A full history and examination is the starting point, and sometimes imaging (such as x-ray or ultrasound) or other tests (e.g. blood test) may be required.
Treatments will depend upon the specific presentation and can include:

Treatments

• Warm footbaths
• Hot or cold packs
• Gentle massage and stretching
• Dealing with any stiffness or weakness
• Ankle, foot and toe exercises
• Footwear (low heels, roomy toe box, correct fit, cushioned sole)
• Lifestyle changes – daily activity, sports and workplace
• Orthotics (insoles) and padding
• Painkillers (e.g. paracetamol) or anti-inflammatory (e.g. Ibuprofen) tablets, creams or gels
• Creams with menthol or capsaicin
• Advice and foot health education
• Referral to other health professionals

Other interventions such as steroid injections or surgery might also be considered.
